It started innocently enough, this little obsession I have with the sunrise. One morning about five years ago, the sunrise seemed kind of pretty so I went out on my deck and snapped a few pics with my iphone. They weren't too bad, but nothing spectacular. But then... she really started messing with me, putting on a show. Sister Sunrise I mean...
I don't know why but for the next couple of years, Sister Sunrise gave me some spectacular displays. Amazing colours, and clouds. Oh yeah, the clouds make all the difference in the world. Some mornings I couldn't believe what I was seeing. And sometimes she would throw in mist and fog, still waters, waves and reflections. And colour. Some days I just can't believe the colours she threw at me. And you had to capture it quickly before it was gone. She's finicky, Sister Sunrise. Some mornings she'd merely tease me. Well, she always teases me.
I'm usually up at 4 am every morning to write, sitting with my trusty laptop in my comfortable Lazyboy chair. Sister Sunrise comes up behind me, my back to her, but with lots of windows, I can feel her beckoning me; the darkness slowly lifting, the hints of colour starting and interrupting my writing. Then it happens, "Shit, I've got to get out there!" Onto the beach I go, to see what she's gonna throw at me that morning. Some mornings, Sue will be up early sitting with me as I write. She'll be facing out to the water, looking over in the direction of Sister Sunrise, and I can just tell from the look on her face, or she'll even say suddenly, "You'd better get out there!" And I scramble with Sue laughing at me. Some winter mornings I've even gone out onto the ice in my housecoat.
I walk along the shore with my old iPhone, getting different angles, seeing how she's going to develop and change. I'll walk to the neighbour's dock. (One of them, Mark and Marlene have even installed a gate for me to get through to their property and their dock). And yes Sister Sunrise changes on me. Sometimes she gets more beautiful, more sexy, and sometimes she just turns over like an old girlfriend in bed and goes blah! And once all the docks and boats are in the water, good clean natural shots of her are harder to get.
But I know one thing, Sister Sunrise and I, we definitely got "something going on," as Marvin Gay used to sing. And it's getting in the way of my Sister Hildegard saga. I think they might be jealous of each other!
